Golden was established in June 1859, during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush. The original mining camp was named Golden City, after Thomas L. Golden. Golden went on to develop as an economic and political hub. The town suffered significant losses in population during the American Civil War, but it continued to persevere and grow. Development boomed after World War II, and in 1959, Golden grew nearly three times its size by annexing large areas of nearby land.
